David Jeffery-Hughes

The main theme of my work is social history. Having grown up through two recessions and a global pandemic before the age of 30, I have become attuned to the current affairs which dominate our lives. Since 2016, I have also had the opportunity to capture events at some of the top nightclubs in the UK. Starting from Thekla Bristol and the O2 Academy Brixton to name a few. I recently completed two projects which were underpinned by my experience of the Covid pandemic. One project, entitled ‘You’ll Never Leave’ was inspired by my experience of living in a

British seaside town during the first national lockdown. The other project, ‘It’s Later Than You Think’ was a series of images I collected during a brief window in which clubs were allowed to re-open, focussing on young people attempting to enjoy their youth.

You'll Never Leave: Home

This picture sums up my experience of the British coastal town, Portishead. Throughout the lockdown in 2020 I was surrounded by a sea of residential buildings. I felt like I was in my own version of the Truman Show.

You'll Never Leave: Trapped

This picture symbolises my mindset during the main portion of the lockdown. I felt like I had been cut away from my life and forced into a dull town.

Time Will Tell: North Street

A project I have been revisiting which I started in 2014. This image depicts the day-to-day life in Bedminster, South Bristol.

Time Will Tell: Asda

A project I have been revisiting which I started in 2014. This image shows a shopper leaving the Asda in Bedminster, walking past an interesting billboard.

It's Later Than You Think

An image from my 'It's Later Than You Think' project which focussed on young people attempting to enjoy their night's out to the Thekla nightclub during the covid pandemic.
