I am Emese Gyorfi, a Hungarian artist currently based in Bristol. I recently graduated from the University of West of England with a Fine Art Degree.
My work primarily centres around feminine portraits and busts with a pop-surrealist twist and a hint of bitter melancholy.
My work is influenced by the Middle European post-communist era, evident in the foggy, cigarette smoke-like highlights floating on dark, smudgy backgrounds. Each of my images is kissed by a fat dinner lady who has been a chain smoker for forty years, creating a unique atmosphere in each piece. The blue-orange complementary colours with a bit of crimson enhance the dramatic effect.
Throughout my art, I aim to preserve my childhood memories and explore various issue sets covered, from domestic violence to recurring nightmares. My practice is driven by a desire to understand how our psyche, past stories and childhood memories impact our present lives.
