Robert Walsh
Architecture 2024
Robert is a Part 1 graduate with an interest in vernacular and site-specific architecture.
Materiality, atmosphere, and a focus on approaching architecture from a human scale is what drives Roberts' practice.
His background as a professional leatherworker for many years feeds into his work through meticulous attention to detail and model-making abilities.
Hand-drawing has been a constant theme in Robert's work having studied fine art at degree level and subsequently teaching drawing in further education.
Robert is actively seeking employment as a part 1 architectural assistant within Bath and surrounding areas.
Structure and materiality
The primary structure is comprised of Load-bearing prefabricated panels filled with Nettle insulation similar to hempcrete. Lime plaster is used as an internal finish. The facade is a combination of fiber cement, timber, and corrugated hemp panels.
1:200 model in context
Dense landscaping surrounds the building on all sides. Planting is focused on providing maximum benefit for pollinators and creating varied habitats.
Nettle-crete
Prototype material made of Nettle stem, Hydraulic Lime and Water. Developed as a result of an in-depth site analysis, this material can be used as an alternative to hempcrete in prefabricated panels.

Ecology survey.
Pencil drawings illustrating findings from a plant survey taken on site. The diverse range of plant and insect life provides evidence of a healthy ecosystem that should be protected and enhanced.
