Jade Meinema

I am a Fashion Textiles Graduate fascinated by Biodesign and sustainable practices. I work with deadstock, waste and biomaterials, eager to learn from the pioneers of a changing fashion system. Being a seamstress for over 3 years, I make patchwork collections to eliminate the studio’s textile waste. I have proficient garment construction and visual communication skills and am very able in Adobe Suite, specifically for technical drawings. My research into sustainability has become a non-negotiable for me in the design process, therefore I have a vast knowledge of materials, sourcing and processes in this field. I enjoy making technical samples, prototyping and being tactile. For me, using ‘limited’ waste materials stimulates boundless creativity.

Technical Sampling

My Final Project, Along the Towpath, took inspiration from individuals living on the canal. It inspired materiality and functionality. My technical samples are made using only waste and deadstock materials, including discarded climbing rope / hardware and lorry curtains.

Line up for Speculative Helen Kirkum Collab

As a speculative collaboration project for footwear designer Helen Kirkum, I designed an accessories collection using reconstructed textiles made from my parents trip to London in the 80's.

Biomaterial Experimentation

In an effort towards circular design, I experimented with algae biomaterials using herbs and food waste as natural dyes. I speculatively designed with it as an innovative material and was nominated for 2024 Graduate Fashion Week's considered design award.

Final Project Look

For my final garments, I designed an apron-style piece of outerwear and trousers made from deadstock and waste materials. The outerwear has hidden pockets, carabiners and function. The wader-style trousers can be pulled up using rope handles.
