'Ladders', piece one
Ladders is a four-piece series in which you experience and understand knitted wire in different ways. To listen, to observe, and to become. The series sees each piece grow more interactive and intimate as they progress.
Amy Coaten is a multi-disciplinary artist and writer currently developing interactive wire and sound installations creating immersive soundscapes. These are produced by interactions between the wire structures in movement, and the resulting kinetic energy converted into sound waves. Alongside technicians, she developed a technique which passes wire through traditional knitting machines. Combining this new material with slow moving DC motors, she attaches contact microphones to transpose and amplify these ominous yet somewhat soothing sounds. Informing the process are questions of how human automation and rituality occur within art and the nature of the practice that reveals itself in the act of doing. Alongside these installations, Coaten also creates sculptures looking at advertising culture, representations of child-rearing techniques and the analysis of speech impediment.
