Karina Barberis is a film-based Irish-Italian photographer from London. Alongside a BA in Spanish and film at the University of Bristol, she began documenting the suburban lives of her first generation London Irish grandparents, as well as communities on a year abroad in Latin America, developing an interest in cultural heritage and tradition through a documentary lens. Then pursuing a career in creative production in music and fashion imagery, her practice became more concept-lead, creative directing and shooting editorial features for brands and artists in Rolling Stone UK, Clash, The Wire, The Guardian, The Gay Times, People and Notion Magazine. Karina’s approach to making work is led by getting to the heart of a story in order to imagine a visual retelling that is true and honest. Stylistically dancing a line between playful surrealism and social documentary portraiture, themes of play, connection, and heritage weave the through-line of her
practice.
