Maria Martinez

I’m a multidisciplinary artist with a fluid practice that spans performance, dance, music, choreography, set and costume design, and filmmaking. By blurring the lines between disciplines and embracing collaboration, I create immersive worlds where stories unfold through bodies, materials, and movement—where every detail matters and nothing is accidental. Sustainability is at the heart of my process; I often work with found and repurposed materials, letting their textures, characteristics, and imperfections shape the outcome as much as I do. As an art director, I blend improvisation with composition to explore and reveal hidden truths— what is seen might be more real than one things. My work invites audiences to look closer, feel deeper, stay curious, and question—just as I do.

Stories Beneath the Skin

Stories Beneath the Skin explores body dysmorphia, identity, and societal expectations, inspired by my experience modelling for live-motion drawing workshop. It highlights how others perceive and depict the same body differently, reflecting subjective ideals and the pressure to conform.

Aggregate

Aggregate responds to the Nothing Twice Archive—notes found by my friend Meriwether Lewis over 10 years. Once trash, now precious evidence of someone’s life. It speaks where the notes can’t, blending ordinary moments with surreal echoes and quiet distortion.

Never the Same River Twice

Never the Same River Twice – the narrative of a multi-dimensional personality. An ode to the ability to transform feelings into a clear form.

toMe2

This video performance explores love, care, and the self. By casting my body, I gave form to the external gaze of self-care. It invites curiosity through obsessive caring and reflection on how natural the act of care should be.
