Joseph Vipond
I'm a visual artist working across Bristol and Birmingham. My work often deals with topics related to our reality, how we perceive society, the different forces and events that affect our thinking and seeing. My ongoing body of work, Quiet Violence, is a creative investigation of the tropical plants growing in the UK as hidden legacies of colonialism. The plants were first introduced to the country during Britain's colonial era which allowed for Western botanists to travel to newly colonised lands, claim discovery over different exotic plants, give them latin names (or even name them after themselves), and then ship them or plant them in the gardens of the emerging British middle and upper class. The project uses this colonial botanical enterprise as a means to explore how the empire still manipulates and distorts our reality and landscape today.
