Nathan Mangar

Hi, I’m Nathan, an Architecture and Planning BA (Hons) graduate with RIBA Part 1 and RTPI accreditation. Much of my research at UWE focused on phenomenology and psychogeography, developing my interest in how the built environment can shape emotional experience, both positively and negatively.

My visual representation process uses a multimedia workflow, moving between CAD, digital hand drawing, and mixed-media techniques to communicate the atmospheric qualities of space. Alongside conceptual research, I enjoy developing context-responsive design proposals that balance human experience with practical and environmental considerations.

As a Part 1 graduate, my goal is to contribute to projects that create emotionally engaging, socially responsive, and locally grounded environments for their users.

Domus Contemplativa Axonometric Site Plan

The project introduces public open space near Fishponds High Street, Bristol, creating a calm setting for rest and reflection that offers a pause from the surrounding urban density and everyday activity.

Long Section Through Domus Contemplativa

Domus Contemplativa uses shifting materiality to guide spatial experience. Warm timber defines arrival and circulation, creating comfort and tactility, while board-formed concrete within the pool spaces introduces stillness, permanence, and quiet introspection, reinforcing the project’s contemplative atmosphere.

Meditation through walking

Through monotony and rhythm of walking we find a state of meditation. The sensory input of water allows us to deeply focus on the rhythm of the breath calming the mind.

The weight of the water with our slow and deliberate steps brings awareness to our muscles and balance.

A pool with a view

Looking out into the natural world we find ourselves in deep relaxation. The mental fatigue and stress that we arrived with melts away. Where this stress once was endorphins now exist.

This pool encourages mindfulness and mental restoration enabling a therapeutic escape from busy life.
