Forrest Shimazu

Forrest Shimazu is an Environmental Educator and Entomologist specializing in moths and butterflies, with a particular interest in their caterpillars. Through science, education, and filmmaking, Forrest hopes to inspire others to appreciate insects, an often-overlooked group that plays vital roles in both ecosystems and society alike.

Through his work at at The Caterpillar Lab, he shares his passion for insects by teaching others about the remarkable native biodiversity that can be found in anyone's backyards and local parks. Forrest thrives in the outdoors, frequently searching, documenting, and filming the incredible behaviors of the macro world. His obsession with caterpillars and the outdoors have led him to working in remote locations, partaking in expeditions in Mexico and Panama, contributing to both research and education.

A project that visually depicted the number of insects that visited a moth-sheet over 24 nights. Each speck is an individual insect that landed on the board. The project was also a part of an insect monitoring research project.
