Dee the Spider

We aimed to make something fun for kids to enjoy, and I had an absolute blast designing the titular character Dee and bringing her to life through animation.

Dee the Spider

A short preschool film about a spider artist that lives in a boring museum. She decides to liven the place up, swinging through the gallery to bring colour and fun to the visitors.

A 5 point turnaround of a blue and pink striped spider wearing a black beret and tall, white boots.

Dee Character Turnaround

The final turnaround for the titular character Dee the Spider. We wanted her to have some fun 60's vibes, as one of our inspirations was Yellow Submarine's Heinz Edelmann.

Various sketches of the blue and pink striped spider character. Some have alternate colourings, while others have different body shapes and art styled.

Dee Design Iterations

Dee went through a few different designs before we settled on her final design. She initially looked far too cockroach-like, which was fixed later down the line.

Colour variations on the spider character design. Some have pink arms and legs, some are darker and more green-tinted, and some have inverted colours for the eyes.

Dee Colour Iterations

Dee was originally a lot darker, but this made her facial expressions hard to make out and didn't really fit with the bright, fun atmosphere we were going for.

Shot 7 Rough Animation

Some rough animation for Shot 7 of the film. Probably the most challenging with the odd perspective, but very satisfying to see finished.

Shot 10 Rough Animation

Some rough animation for Shot 10 of the film. The first shot I tackled, pushing me to figure out the perspective movements early on.
