Martin Parr: Making meaning through editorial context

My Martin Parr project began in the Foundation’s archive, where I researched and catalogued the different editorial contexts in which Parr’s photographs had appeared. Tracing images from Small World and Common Sense across magazines, advertisements and photobooks revealed how dramatically publication and framing can reshape their meaning. This research developed into a curated display and public tour exploring mass tourism, consumerism and globalisation. By inviting audiences to share their own interpretations, the project brought archival material into conversation with contemporary experiences and demonstrated how photographs continue to acquire new meanings as they circulate.
