Through the assembly of the tangible and surreal imagery of my mind’s eye, my paintings, drawings and installation invoke an atmosphere of calm and thoughtfulness that sits on the hopeful side of melancholy. Exposing the subtleties of queer love, I paint through a lens of colour that exudes sentiments of anxiety in the presence of romance. Recurring motifs are a mechanism of order and control. These reoccurrences express a pursuit of the unresolved and emerge from a ritualistic approach to making. My childhood teddy bear, the softness of linen and the faint smell of orange peel are intercepted by broken glass, concrete and wire. Conflicting themes coexist peacefully in my work, where safety meets discomfort and calm meets chaos.
Alongside my practice, I co-run not-for-profit queer artist’s collective, Dirty Spread Collective. The collective has an emphasis on accessibility and providing a platform to underrepresented creatives.
