Ellie Caudwell

Since the completion of my undergraduate degree, I am excited to enhance my ideas and knowledge during my master's at UWE in September. During my studies, I have gained a multitude of skills, from hand drawing to industry software, which are vital skills that I can take with me after my studies. Due to my great interest, I aim to enhance my understanding of new technological construction methods and biophilic design. These topics are essential to our health, well-being, and planet and must be considered more throughout our designs.

Project: The Harbourside Foundation for Teaching - Creating a playful, professional environment for primary education university students. Immersing the students in a child's playful, imaginative mindset will prepare them to teach primary school students after university. This will enable the teaching of children to become clearer and more effective.

Integrating play into the work environment

Located in the heart of the city, on the border between professional and playful typologies, the building aims to look and be playful to heal this divide. I took inspiration from fun playground activities.

Old to New

The existing structure is being demolished except for the diamond facade on the west, which is being kept as a reminder of the site's architectural heritage. The form is inspired around children's play-blocks stacked on top of one another.

Context and Materiality

Taking Bristol's local vernacular through materials and my concept of play-blocks, I created the illusion of the building being constructed of large 'blocks' stacked on top of one another. Every 'block' has a different cladding material.

Student Experience

Studying in cafes and cosy spaces is increasing and becoming the norm. It has proven to boost self-esteem and work ethic and benefit mental health. Every floor includes spaces to replicate this environment through internal furnishings and large open spaces.

Public Experience

Direct movement paths enable orientation through the site, but the design naturally brings out the child within you due to the building's unpredictable form. It enhances playful forms of movement, generating a willingness to explore the unknown.
