Fran Cave

My photography often serves as the starting point, using images from my travels but increasingly from places which hold a personal connection. Working predominately in printmaking, I create scenes which share a narrative but leaves the viewer to complete the story. Inspiration comes from an appreciation of historical architecture and a sense of place. ‘In the Frame’ my recent work on gentrification as a result of tourism, references the cultural loss and displacement felt by residents.

Technically my practice has developed through postgraduate study to include screen printing and ceramics, adding layers of colour and materiality to my work. I aim to create pieces which connect personal and collective histories.

‘Depletion’ series of Tiles

A series of terracotta tiles with varying finishes to represent the cultural loss of Portuguese azulejos as they are removed from building façades to sell.

Alfama Tiles

When walking around the streets of Alfama, you might notice a building with tiles missing. These tiles often end up in markets for sale. Chipping away at the very fabric of the city.

The Gaze

Looking at the tourists in the Largo de Santa Luzia. The optical magnifier zooms in on the activity but looks like a souvenir that a tourist might take home.

From Alfama with Love - Artist’s Book

A collection of cyanotypes which make up a visual timeline from the 1990’s to this year. Memories and change recorded with digital photos transformed by one of the earliest photographic processes.

Pessoa Reflects

A screenprint which captures two iconic cultural images. The poet Fernando Pessoa looking out to the Panteâo National, which holds the tombs of writers, presidents and Amalia Rodrigues one of the most adored fado singers.
