Alongside my degree, I was fortunate to work with UWE NEWWAVE to facilitate work experience in digital marketing and content production. With the support of Anneliese Paul, I secured a 10-week internship with Creative Connex, a media marketing company focused on empowering minority communities by offering digital marketing solutions.
Working alongside Filmmaking UWE alumni, Teya Dardha, we launched the Save Our Caribbean Activities fundraising campaign. This project involved a collaboration of my digital marketing and content creation skills and her videography, resulting in a successful campaign that raised awareness for an elders’ group based in St. Pauls.
Working with the elders was an incredibly rewarding experience. Hearing their stories and bonding with the group was truly special. A highlight was attending their Christmas tea and tour at Merchants’ Hall, where we captured live event content, learned about Bristol’s history, and celebrated with the Elders and Creative Connex Team.
During my internship, I gained valuable industry skills and grew professionally. I learned to navigate a hybrid work environment and touch base with the team throughout my creative process. At the end of the ten weeks, I was grateful to be invited to join the team in a permanent role. As a paid freelancer, I focus on content creation and running their Instagram page.
Our work for the Save Our Caribbean Activities campaign was also featured in the UWE NEWWAVE exhibition at Arnolfini, which ran from the 7th of February to the 16th of March 2025. Being a part of this exhibition and recognised amongst such talented creatives was a rewarding experience. We also attended the celebration event on the 14th of March, with Creative Connex CEO Roger Griffiths, other featured creatives, and the NEWWAVE team.
Overall, these additional experiences positively shaped the prospects of my degree, facilitating a dynamic career in the creative industries. I want to express my thanks to the NEWWAVE team for their amazing work in leveraging creative voices from all backgrounds to Roger Griffiths and the Creative Connex team for guiding me into the professional world, and Teya Dardha for tackling this experience by my side.
