Final year students from creative undergraduate courses in UWE’s School of Arts are invited to apply for a fully funded bursary place on East Bristol Contemporary’s Day School (worth £1320).

WHAT IS DAY SCHOOL?

Day School is a year-long alternative education programme, offering artists a shared studio space alongside monthly education days with guest artists, support and advice for work and careers, and other professional development opportunities, community projects and social occasions.

Day School Provides:

  • A year-long programme designed to support individual progression and professional development.
  • A small cohort of 14 (maximum) artists and practitioners with a broad range of disciplines and interests.
  • 24/7 access to a shared studio at St Anne’s House, Bristol.
  • Monthly education days (Saturdays) with invited guest artist/educator (including talks, workshops, crits, 121s, discussions and other group projects).
  • 121s with Day School coordinators Harriet Bowman and Natasha MacVoy.
  • Opportunities to work collaboratively and to contribute to workshops and talks.
  • Annual group project or exhibition and social occasions.

Who is day school for?

Day School might have particular relevance for:

  • Artists / Makers / Designers / Architects / Musicians / Illustrators / Film makers / Writers and those engaged in an arts practice to communicate ideas.
  • Those who feel excluded from mainstream or postgraduate education for any reason, such as rising costs or a programme that conflicts with other responsibilities.
  • Recent graduates looking to continue developing their practice with access to a lighter touch education programme.

When is it?

Day School 2024/25 runs from August 2024 – July 2025

Cost

The cost of attending Day School is usually £110 per month. UWE’s bursary funds a full place on Day School (worth £1320).

The UWE bursary is open to any final year undergraduate from UWE’s School of Arts, graduating in summer 2024, who has a socially engaged art practice, and a strong commitment to collaboration and community. All School of Arts programmes are eligible, including courses in: Art, Design, Drama & Acting, Fashion, Filmmaking, Animation & Photography, English, History & Writing, Journalism & Media.

Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) 2024/25 bursary details:

-A FULL BURSARY to a participant based in Knowle West (BS4) who identifies as from a working-class background OR a HALF BURSARY to a participant based in South Bristol (BS3, BS4, BS13, BS14) who identifies as from a working-class background.

In addition, KWMC and Day School would be interested if this person’s practice is socially engaged / participatory – or if they are looking to develop in this area. The bursary recipient will be asked produce a one-off workshop or talk to be hosted at KWMC.

Visual Arts Southwest (VASW) 2024/25 Bursary details:

-£220 bursary, open to any applicant.

-A short expression of interest telling us your motivations for participating in Day School (max 350 words or link to an audio or video recording max 4mins).

-An attached PDF portfolio (please ensure files are a max 3MB) or a link to your website or Instagram

-A statement about your practice or your interests with a bio and/or cv

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an informal online conversation to discuss the programme and their practice (20 mins)

Applications to be received by 10 JUNE 2024, with interviews week commencing 24 June 2024.

Accessibility

Day School is happy to discuss any accessibility requirements to ensure the programme is suitable and supportive to each individual’s needs. St Anne’s House is accessible via ramps external to the building, and an internal lift, with accessible toilets on the ground floor.
