We Design for the Community is a support Programme and Summer School organised by Marco Ugolini (UWE Graphic Design BA) and Axel Feldmann from objectif.co.uk
The aim of the programme is to pair up design and communication students and neo graduates with grassroots London-based community and cultural organisations that normally would not have a budget to develop their digital and visual communication. The programme is in fact organised within the supervision of the Greater London Authority cultural and community spaces at risk programme (https://www.london.gov.uk/programmes-strategies/arts-and-culture/space-culture/cultural-infrastructure-plan-and-toolbox/support-culture-and-community-spaces-risk) and financially supported by the Mayor of London.
This year saw the programme running for its 4th consecutive year, with 12 London-based community and cultural organisations and 12 design and communication students.
The participating students in 2025 came from the University of Greenwich, Warwick University, the Royal College of Arts, London College of Communication, Kings college, Falmouth and Middlesex University.
UWE has kindly contributed to running the programme by providing Research funding to support 4 UWE students for their design services. The successfully selected students were from a range of years and departments. Freya Hills and Gabi Peskin-Cooper (Graphic Design BA Lv6), Lottie Hodges (GD BA Lv4) and Zeb Taylor-Breen (MA Graphic Arts).
UWE students developed a series of design projects in a short amount of time, which included brand identities, illustrations, typography, images for social media campaigns, etc…
A series of posters created during the programme were prominently displayed across public spaces in London through a partnership with BuildHolliwood, significantly enhancing the organisation’s visibility and allowing its message to reach a wide and diverse audience.
On top of the support programme, during the summer school, both the students and the organisations met in a series of lectures and workshops on creative writing for web, social media and funding applications (by Anna Faherty, Kingston University) and Social Media Management (by Salena Barry who works for the Borough of Islington).
We want to thank all students and organisations for their generous contribution towards a positive social impact in their communities. Thanks to the University of Greenwich Graphic Design department who is making sure the summer school can take place in their campus. And special thanks to UWE CATE Public/ Community Engagement and Knowledge Exchange fund for making this possible.
