On Unity St, Old Market
My approach to generosity as design brief ventures to explore the social ethics of overconsumption and material waste to propose a centre for recycling and reusing second hand clothing for the site of Bristol Old Market.
My approach to generosity as design brief ventures to explore the social ethics of overconsumption and material waste to propose a centre for recycling and reusing second hand clothing for the site of Bristol Old Market.
The proposal, The Fashion Hub, has a concept derived from the fluid nature of fabrics. In which the surfaces are carved with forms taken from fabric exploration.
My proposal’s contrast in materials, glulam frame and CLT interior walls, is regulated through a choice of similar surface cladding, brick in particular.
The approach fosters visual connectivity while allowing for contemporary exploration. The perforation of the cladding adds an interplay of light within the balcony spaces.
The journey through the building aims for fabric production to be inviting, transparent and collaborative. The proposal does this through use of double heighted spaces, allowing views into workshop spaces which are traditionally considered private.
Influenced by the wish to make fashion more accessible to the building, the fashion hub desires an intimate connection to the community. As such, it pairs amenities with fabric production stages.
